In the first two chapters of Zinns history, we learn a lot about about the mythology of the founding of the United States; Columbus as hero and discoverer of the US; the Native Peoples; race as a construct; and much more. Zinn admits that he is writing history from the bottom up, rather than from the winners viewpoint which was the usual way of writing history. Many of us learned our history as the winners saw it; thus, a mythology was created.
All countries have mythologies, but ours may be different in many ways. For this essay, consider the mythology of the founding and discovery. What does it mean about us as a nation, or as conquerors? Why do we need to know the whole story rather than one side? In your essay, use textual references to explain your own discoveries from this history. Take a stand; you do not have to agree with Zinn, but you always have to support your ideas. Use your forum responses and your reader response to develop your essay.
