Kindly include references My goals out the outset of this chapter were to get into nursing school and start my career, while that has not changed this chapter has me thinking about what I will do once I get old. I think as a 20 year old female, I tend not to think about aging and often only think about what I need to do right now to get myself to a stable life, where I can support myself. Of course, I also wanted to form a support system around me of friends and family that can help as I age and be there to support my family as they age, which was always important to me. This chapter actually taught me alot about the physical changes, of course I knew staying active was important and I like to run although I am somewhat infrequent with it the chapter mentioned that weight bearing exercise is important, and I think I want to try and integrate that into my life in order to slow muscle degeneration (Lumen Learning 2022). This chapter also had me looking up ways to protect my eyes, as it talked about eyesight degeneration and I already wear glasses and would like to not lose my vision and found that a diet with increased lutein (found in leafy green vegetables and egg yolks) helps protect from age related macular degeneration (Alves-Rodrigues et al 2004). This is important to know and I may start eating more spinach. I think Id like to start making little changes to my lifestyle to help apply what I have learned. I dont want to do anything drastic and dont particularly feel like I need to make any exorbitant changes, but would like to start preventative measures now, rather than when I start to see the decline in health, however many years from now. what is your view regarding discussion below? While I enjoyed learning about longer lived people in blue zones and Dan Buettners lifestyle characteristics, I thought it was really interesting that older people could travel and study abroad using Elderhostels to continue to learn, grown and extend their quality of life (Lumen Learning, 2022, p. 501).With respect to physical changes, it was interesting to learn that although both primary and secondary aging affect us, with primary aging inevitably affecting hair, skin, height, weight, vision and hearing; secondary aging, underscored by chronic illness such as cancer, heart disease, hypertension and stroke, or diabetes is largely avoidable or reversible through healthy eating, physical activity, avoiding tobacco and moderating alcohol (Lumen Learning, 2022, p. 473-480). I believe that the effect of physical activity on healthier aging cannot be understated in preventing obesity, high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Metabolic syndrome, prevalent in half the population over age 60, can be reversed (Lumen Learning, 2022, p.477-482). Physical activity has been found to have effect on the brain, reducing depression and facilitating mood, enhancing cognitive activity and preventing neuropsychiatric disorder (Erikson, 2013). I plan on exercising from now, until as long as I can to stay as healthy as I can, including not just cardiovascular activity, but also strength staining to prevent osteoporosis, which affects 9-38% women at a rate four times that of men, and Asian women even more, so I am at risk (Lumen Learning, 2022, p.477-482). The CDC recommends moderate activity 150 minutes a week, two days of muscle strengthening activity and activities that improve balance (CDC, 2022). I exercise less than I should, being deep into the generativity stage of life with my family, work and school. If I want to enjoy integrity and wisdom in my later years, stemming from good physical health, I need to make more time to be active (Lumen Learning, 2022, p.80). Social SciencePsychology PSYC 208
