The abolition of slavery in the post-Revolutionary North and the development of a free black community there; the expansion of slavery in the South and the impact of this growth on enslaved peoples lives and culture; the domestic slave trade and its impact on enslaved families; the use of enslaved African Americans in early medical research and experimentation; the fundamental relationship between enslaved womens bodies and medical innovation; and African-American resistance to enslavement. Your essay should be attentive to the ways that gender shaped the experiences of slavery and freedom for African Americans during this period as well.
