You are a keen surfer and have gone down to visit your favourite surf beach only to find there are a lot of emergency personnel around and signs up telling everyone to stay out of the water. You head into the surf lifesaving clubhouse to find out theres an emergency meeting in progress to discuss an oil spill that has just occurred in the bay. Several surfers are not concerned they are claiming that because the oil is liquid, it will just mix with the waves and not be a problem. Others in the group believe that this is a bigger problem and an argument has developed. Your fellow club members know you are studying chemistry and turn to you for an explanation of the chemical aspects of the disaster.Prepare a report for the community to present the important chemical information about the way oil spills behave in water. Your report will be used to help the club and the town to plan for a clean-up of the oil spill and will also be used for any similar future problems.
