This exercise will give each student experience in utilizing a genogram, culturagram, and an ecomap as methods of assessment. Students will create a genogram, culturagram, and ecomap based on their life and family or may opt to use the main character, Starr, from the film, The Hate You Give. You will also be assessing Starr via the film later in the semester.
A genogram is a graphic representation of a family tree that displays detailed data on relationships among individuals. It extends beyond a traditional family tree by allowing the user to analyze hereditary patterns and psychological factors that may influence relationships and behaviors. Genograms allow social workers and clients to work together to quickly identify and understand various patterns in the clients family history, which may have had an influence on the clients current state of mind. On the genogram, students should emphasize identified strengths, targets for change, patterns, and relationships within the family environment. Students will also complete an ecomap. Included in the ecomap should be significant environmental and social systems, sources of stress and support, and the nature of relationships. Finally, students will complete a culturagram, which will aid in the understanding of how backgrounds impact their lives. Students will briefly discuss their genogram, culturagram, and ecomap in a two to three paged self-reflection paper. The paper should describe the information gained by using these assessment tools. Examples of genograms, culturagrams, and ecomaps can be found on the links, but if you do a search, you will find many more.
You may use software, PowerPoint, Word, or draw your genogram, culturagram, and ecomap. Be certain that the graphics are clear, professionally constructed, and submitted in a compatible file type such as a Word document or a PDF.
