The purpose of this assignment is for students understand community by applying commuity theory and concepts to a documentary.
Students will watch it independently, then submit a 2-3 page essay that responds to the prompts below.
The paper must include references.
Overall Directions
Discuss your understanding of community what did the Garden replace? Whose self-interest was being served when the Garden was created? Who might have been ignored?
Discuss your understanding of the role of competing self-interests or conflicts of interest, namely, who are the players, what do they want and why? What are the larger socio-economic forces/dynamics that affected the Garden? Be specific name the forces and include academic literature and course content to support your perspective.
Discuss your understanding of the importance of power identify the players, the shifting alliances, how did their positions change over time and why? For example, what was the mayors position at outset and how/why did it change? Do NOT limit just to the mayor; use this as a guide.
What roles do social workers play and what roles might they have played? In retrospect as a community organizer, how might you have handled the situation?
Provide summation what was the downfall of the Garden? What happened to the community? What is the relevance to todays social issues?
